Future Changes in the Job Market in Korea
Hi everyone, I’m currently majoring in engineering, and I’m in Korea as an exchange student. Right now, I’m preparing for a master’s program in electrical engineering. I’ve heard that the job market in Korea is pretty tough these days, so I’m wondering if things might improve over the next few years. With the population declining, I was thinking there could be a labor shortage in the future, which might open up more opportunities for foreigners too. I’m planning to graduate in 2028, and I’m also continuing to study Korean. If I can reach around TOPIK Level 5 by then, do you think I’d have a realistic chance of getting hired in Korea in 2028? Thanks for reading!

I don’t fully agree, but I think linking population decline directly to labor shortages is a bit too simple. As society ages, spending and investment patterns shift, which can actually reduce total hiring demand. For popular fields like engineering, competition may get tougher rather than easier. And with AI automation accelerating, demand will likely shift from “more workers” to “high-skill talent.” Still, if you build strong technical skills, reach TOPIK 5+, and gain local experience, getting hired in Korea in 2028 is definitely realistic.
