What Actually Matters on Your CV: A Recruiter's-Eye Guide for Job Seekers in Korea

One of the hardest parts of job hunting is writing your CV — and then rewriting it, again and again, for every single position. Don’t ever apply with the same CV twice, especially when the roles are very different from one another.

But personalizing your CV for each application is easier said than done. You can quickly feel lost: what should you include, what should you cut, what's actually worth mentioning, and how long should it even be? Don't worry, we've got you covered.

1. Education

List your education in reverse chronological order, most recent first, working backward.

Should you include everything? No.

That one-month summer school? The exchange semester you did in Europe? It depends. If the program is directly related to your field of study and the institution is well-regarded, include it. But if the exchange was short, your grades weren't strong, and the school isn't well known, leave it out. Padding your education section with minor programs doesn't make your CV stronger — it just adds clutter and invites questions you don't want to answer in an interview.

2. Experience

As you'd expect, experience is the most important section on your CV. If you have solid, relevant experience, lead with it — and don't just list your job titles. Show what skills you gained, what you actually did day to day, and what projects you contributed to. Wherever possible, back it up with numbers: "Managed a team of 5," "Increased efficiency by 20%," "Handled 100+ client inquiries per week." Concrete numbers make your impact easy for a recruiter to picture, even if they only spend 20 seconds on your CV.

Should I include a short-term online internship?

If you have no other experience at all, go ahead and include it : something is better than nothing. But if you already have real, substantial experience, a short-term online internship usually won't add much weight. Most hiring managers won't give it serious consideration next to actual work history.

And this applies more broadly, too: don't list every experience you've ever had. More isn't always better — a CV full of unrelated jobs can actually work against you. If you're applying for a data management role, but your only listed experience is in HR, you'll likely get questioned about the mismatch. Choose the experiences that build a clear, coherent story around the job you're applying for, and leave out the ones that don't fit that story — even if they took up a lot of your time.

• Inconsistent & Shorthand Dates: Mixes hyphenated months (2021.09-12) with Korean shorthand (19년 6월~8월).
• Vague Job Details: Provides zero numbers, scale, or specific tools used.
• Informal Naming: Abbreviates names (한국뉴욕주립대 instead of full official name) and leaves job titles blank (-).

3. Certifications

Ask yourself: does this certificate actually demonstrate ability in your field, or does it just confirm you know the basics? A free Coursera certificate, for example, usually won't move the needle much. A recognized, rigorous certification — like an official Project Management Professional (PMP) credential — can genuinely strengthen your CV. Beyond that, resist the urge to list every certificate you've ever earned. A long list of minor certifications can actually make your CV look padded rather than impressive.

4. Photo

Should you include a photo?

Yes — if you're applying to a Korean company. Photos are a standard, expected part of Korean-style resumes (이력서), and leaving one off can actually look unusual to a local hiring manager.

No — if you're applying to a US-based company or an international organization. In those contexts, including a photo can even raise legal or bias concerns for the employer, so it's best left out.

5. Format and Layout

Beyond content, how your CV looks matters more than people expect. A few quick rules:

• Stick to one clean font (Arial, Calibri, or a similar sans-serif) and keep font sizes consistent across sections.
• Use clear section headers so a recruiter can scan your CV in seconds, not minutes.
• Avoid excessive colors, graphics, or icons — especially for corporate or conservative industries. Save the creative templates for design-specific roles.
• Save it as a PDF before sending, so formatting doesn't break across different devices or software.

6. Common Mistakes to Avoid

A few small things we see often that quietly hurt otherwise strong CVs:

• Generic objective statements like "hardworking and passionate individual seeking opportunities to grow." Recruiters skip right past these — cut it and use the space for something concrete instead.
• Listing responsibilities instead of achievements. "Responsible for customer service" says far less than "Resolved 95% of customer complaints within 24 hours."
• Typos and inconsistent formatting. Small errors suggest a lack of attention to detail! Proofread carefully, and ideally have someone else review it too.
• Including irrelevant personal details (marital status, religion, height/weight) unless specifically expected in a traditional Korean-style resume format.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use a Korean-style resume template or a Western-style CV?
It depends on where you're applying. Korean companies generally expect the local 이력서  format, which includes a photo and sometimes personal details like date of birth. International companies and foreign organizations based in Korea usually expect a Western-style CV instead: no photo, achievement-focused, and typically one page. When in doubt, check the job posting or company website for cues, or default to the style used in the country where the company is headquartered.

Do I need a cover letter too?
For many companies in Korea, yes — a cover letter (자기소개서) is often expected alongside your CV, especially for larger or more traditional companies. It's your chance to explain why you want this specific role and company, something your CV can't fully capture. Skipping it when one is expected can make your application look incomplete, even if your CV itself is strong.

How far back should my experience go?
As a general rule, focus on the last 5–10 years, or your most relevant roles, whichever gives the fuller picture. Older or unrelated jobs can usually be summarized in a single line or left off entirely, especially once you have a few solid, relevant positions to lead with.

Can I use the same CV for every job I apply to?
No — and this is one of the biggest mistakes we see. Even small adjustments matter: reordering sections to highlight what's most relevant, swapping in different keywords from the job posting, or removing experience that doesn't support the role. A CV that's clearly tailored signals genuine interest; a generic one signals a mass application.

What if I don't have much experience yet?
Lean harder into your education, coursework, projects, and any transferable skills from part-time work, volunteering, or student organizations. Frame everything around the skills the job actually requires, and don't be afraid to explain results in smaller terms — group projects, coursework assignments, or personal projects can all count if presented well.
