1. Introduction: What is KIIP and Why Do You Need It?

• What is KIIP?

KIIP is an education program run by the Ministry of Justice (법무부) that helps immigrants learn the basics of life in Korea ( the Korean language, Korean culture, and Korean society ) so they can settle in and become self-reliant members of society.

• Who is it for?

Long-term foreign residents, spouses of Korean citizens, workers, and students who plan to settle in Korea.

⚠️ Short-term visa holders cannot apply. You need an Alien Registration Card (ARC) to enroll.

• Why it matters?

KIIP isn't just a language class, it's the immigration system's preferred Korean-language credential, and effectively a fast track to permanent residency (F-5), the points-based F-2-7 visa, and naturalization (becoming Korean citizen). Specifically, it offers:

• Points toward the F-2-7 visa :  a meaningful chunk of the total score.
• An exemption from the F-5 permanent residency language test if you complete Level 5.

Tuition (as of January 2025)

• An exemption from the naturalization written test and interview, again by completing Level 5.

KIIP classes used to be free; now you need to pay a small amount of tuition fee the Ministry of Justice has since introduced it:
 

Full tuition exemptions apply to:

• Independence patriots and their families.
• National merit honorees and their families.
• Recipients of basic living subsidies.
• Individuals with severe disabilities.
• Minors under certain visa categories (F-1, F-2, G-1 visas) who meet specific criteria.

50% Tuition Fee Reductions:

• Participants who attend 100% of the class hours.
• Participants recommended by their instructors for exceptional learning attitudes.

How to pay: Your class teacher will usually notify you near the end of the course, followed by a payment message. If you don't receive one, pay manually on Socinet:

1. Log in to Socinet.
2. Go to My Page (마이페이지).
3. Find your class under Status (상태).
4. Click Payment (결제) next to the course.
5. Choose credit card or bank transfer to complete payment.

2. Major Visa Benefits & Points Breakdown

• F-5 Permanent Residency: Completing Level 4 or 5 waives the separate Korean-language proof requirement.
• F-2-7 Points Visa: KIIP completion adds up to 28 points to your total score (see table below).
• Naturalization: Completing Level 5 and passing the Naturalization Comprehensive Test (KINAT) exempts you from the citizenship interview and written test.
• D-10 / E-7 Visas: You earn bonus points just for taking the placement pre-test, regardless of your result.

3. KIIP Curriculum & Levels Breakdown
 

After Level 5, you must sit the Comprehensive Test to finish the program.

4. How to Register: Portals, Pre-Tests, and TOPIK Conversion

• The Dual Portal System:
  • Socinet (socinet.go.kr): class registration, attendance tracking, and completion certificates.
  • KIIP Test Portal (kiiptest.org): registration for official exams (pre-test, midterm, comprehensive).

Step 1: Create an Account on Socinet

All KIIP processes are managed through the official Social Integration Network (Socinet) website.

1. Go to www.socinet.go.kr.
2. Register (회원가입) using your Alien Registration Number.
3. Make sure your personal details exactly match your ARC records.

Step 2: Choose your starting point

Option A: Starting right away

Start from Level 0. Register directly through Socinet's class registration system, no placement test needed.

Option B : Taking the Placement Pre-Test (사전평가):

Take the placement test (사전평가, "Sajeon Pyeongga"). Anyone who isn't a complete beginner must take this to be placed into Level 1–4.

The exam covers listening, reading, grammar, and an oral interview. Test dates are posted on Socinet under "Level Test Application"; after you take it, your assigned level appears on your account, and the class registration period is announced afterward.

Option C : TOPIK Score Conversion:

Submit your TOPIK score report to your local immigration office by email (call 1345 to confirm the correct address for your region, since it varies by office), along with your ARC and the 사회통합프로그램 연계 신청서 (Social Integration Program Linkage Application). Once confirmed, you can register directly at the corresponding level.
